With spellcraft and 23 int, he's casting at a higher level than 38, making the longshot chance of him landing the sleep somewhat less insane, but still highly improbable.

You can have -130 svs, high resistance stats, and several effects granting extra chances of resistance, and you may still fail a save 1-2% of the time.

A nat 1 is a nat 1.
