I'd suggest using the keypad.

IE Key0, Key1, etc can be bound. I use this for familiar and CMUD comes with a package already made for this. When you go into macros you can switch to the English Keypad package in the upper right corner, then just change the actual macro to what you want for each key. All of my familiar commands, release, conjuring it, looking at all, etc, are bound to my keypad.
