It would take a some trigger work to do this automatically or a lot of hand data entry, but yes. The map itself is a database and you would set up triggers or data entry to store item ids in a second database. Then you would add items from the item database to the map database (probably manually, but i have yet to look at it with triggers). You could do a similar process with mobs if you wanted.
A side note, you can set up the database fields and triggers to pull whatever information you want from the item when you identify it. On my last mud I created an alias "id" to turn on the database entry class and open the database, wait a short period of time with the triggers active to put the data into the database, then close the database. You should be complete with the information you want to pull out. Think of every use you would ever need for any bit of information. I made that mistake after a couple hundred ids and realized that material type was something I wanted for a different character... so you either start for scratch or do some hefty manual entry.
