I used my original post to clarify this point because there exists the view
that Assange is nothing but a pawn of the big bad russian masterminds.

As I've described, this is not the case. Assange has his own agenda,
one that has been public for many years. He was part of the group
of people that, close to 3 decades ago, realized what cyberwar
was and what it implied. Others from the same "hacker underground"
went to work for the NSA in early 2000 which is when the
"total information awareness" program began to take off
(part of it funded by DARPA).

The russians are closer to Assange than the NSA, because they
too are willing to directly engage with the feedback loops that shape
society these days without being hampered by 4-year election cycles or
the democratic process. Which is really the reason they're so much better
at that cyber thing than the americans, even though they possess
inferior technology. They've shifted the entire domain and are playing
on a higher level that the NSA is not (yet) allowed to operate in.
