On a monthly basis, do you pay more in taxes, or for health insurance?
I pay much (much) more in taxes than for medical insurance.
If you are implying that going to a single-payer system would cost less, or benefit me and my family more, this is absolutely false. I would likely be paying 3-4 times the amount for my health insurance than I am now (assuming a 15% increase in taxes which it might require), and likely be getting less for it.
Now that said, my employer pays for a good chunk of health insurance and I'm aware that not everyone has this benefit.
Also I have to say that I think the current system is very lousy, largely because the insurance companies do have a stranglehold on the system. For instance, if you're a doctor, try opening a practice that has the option to set your own prices for procedures, and offer cash-only solutions, and see if the health insurance companies allow you to exist-- they won't because essentially you'll be an all cash-only practice since no insurance provider will work with you.
