Flinn talked to Karpov (on several subjects).
Then he reported his talk to VP, noting subjects he was talking about (omitting the sanctions part). The reason for omitting may be whatever - he forgot, he didn't think it was important, he was a Russian spy, he was blown by a Russian student at the time.
Then VP says Flinn didn't talk about sanctions.
Then dems say "Fuck you we have tap".
And Flinn goes "oh right, I did talk about sanctions as well".
But the trap is already closed, VP looks stupid because he said Flinn didn't talk about sanctions. Flinn is accused of misinforming VP and laid off.
Notice how he is not laid off because he talked to Karlov (that would be the stupidest thing to do), he is laid off because he made VP say thiings not true.
---------------------
In the end, it was not talk with Russian embassador that led to him being removed from office, it was the communication problem within the team. People thinking otherwise are plain stupid.
