Liu Cixin's Three Body Problem and its associated series is really amazing for its fantastical imagination. You'll come across sci-fi/tech speculations that you'd never even thought were possible to dream up.

Isaac Asimov: Foundation series. Great classic, got me into economics a long time ago when I was pre-University.

Neal Stephenson: Cryptonomicon. Extremely big book (>1000 pages), long-winded at times (there's a famous whole chapter about some dude's pantyhose fetish which has no bearing on the plot at all), but parts of it are just incredible. Being a maths-oriented kind of person, I identified really strongly with the the thought processes of two of the characters, Lawrence Waterhouse and Randall Waterhouse.

I have also heard very good things about Iain M Banks' Culture series of books, but haven't personally read them.

Agree about Cixin (tho more scifiish) and Kingkiller. Lukyanenko / night watch series also good.
