Matthew 25:41
Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
Unless the everlasting fire isn't burning for eternity, then I think we can at least agree there's some form of eternal burning happening. Maybe you believe that no one is burning right now, and believe in something more similar to:
Quote
Malachi 4:1-5
'All the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble. And the day which is coming shall burn them up,' Says the Lord of hosts, 'That will leave them neither root nor branch’...You shall trample the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet.”
Which is tricky, because that sounds like the wicked's bodies are being burnt up. Then again, bodies don't go to heaven or hell do they? If so, everyone in heaven and hell would be a skeleton. Neat!
So bodies don't burn forever, but do souls (or something else)?
Quote
Matthew 25:46
Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.
It seems Matthew is implying that it's possible to be punished eternally, but he doesn't say if it is a body or not. Here, he also doesn't specifically say that anyone is being burnt. Although...
Quote
Matthew 13:50
and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth
Matthew does imply that there's some sort of burning going on. Good Lad Mark seems to agree that something is burning.
Quote
Mark 9:43
If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out.
Still, one might not think that people/their souls/whatever burn for an eternity.
Quote
Jude 1:7
In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.
Oh. A punishment of eternal fire sounds a lot like burning for a pretty long forever.
pls respond
