I think pain can exist in many forms (e.g physical, emotional, spiritual, etc. But those are just simplifications just like when management consultants try to describe the performance of a video game with "ARPU and Retention". In this case though I was more thinking about physical conditioning, like slapping oneself all over or going for a run and jumping in cold water. I've thought about BDSM but I have no sexual attraction to that scene (nor any other one really) so it feels a bit weird.
