In the post your citing I'm also referencing qualitative factors that don't apply to the "what is a better investment" question. Factors like space, feeling of ownership, community, etc.
In this thread though, I was answering Orb's point that home ownership is a better financial investment. From the perspective of an investment solely meant to increase your financial standing - the home you live in is unlikely to be more profitable than a diversified portfolio of securities and fixed income.

You'll also note that in that thread I'm talking about the common person - not someone like a lawyer or other high salaried professional. Obviously "having equity to fall back on" is less important when you have a six figure portfolio muni portfolio.
