...the movie Lifeforce [www.imdb.com] has to be the most original take on vampires ive ever scene. It is a bit dated but still very cool. It was directed by Tobe Hooper of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist fame. The special F/X were done by the same gusy who did poltergeist so very good for 80s stuff. Oh, and the lead vampire is smokin hot.

The original novel is called unorginally enough: Space Vampires, I havent read it but the author is Colin Wilson.
