I played football/sports in Jr. High/High School, and went to a bohemian West Coast school that completely brainwashed me against "mainstream culture." UC Santa Cruz, for those in the know. :) Anyway, a couple years back some co-workers convinced me to join a fantasy league and before I knew it I was watching 6-8 games a week to keep up to date.
Fantasy football is good because once you get beyond the commercial outlines, it teaches you to appreciate the strategic nuances and intangibles of the sport to get an edge over your competitors - and it also divorces you from feeling primal emotions while watching games because you're not tied to the success of any one team. You're basically watching to observe potential player pickups for your fantasy team and hopefully to be entertained - and you'll find there are only a handful of teams that are really entertaining for their own sake.
After a while, I bought season tickets for my local team and before I knew it, I was invested in their success - because going to a football game, tailgating, hanging out with fans, watching the game with fans, being right there next to the field - it's hugely entertaining and an awesome way to spend an afternoon. But beneath that is the puzzle-solving/strategic/whatever stimulation that comes from seeing how plays unfold and playing fantasy sports.
Anyway, don't knock it until you've tried it.
