Goes a little bit more into "enviromental" quests, which now that I see where they were headed gives a strong nudge to quests like ambush on the north road, planar sanctum, and Kteng's Lab. I also like the idea of tasks which might include stuff for adding incentive's to ran in more interesting or dangerous places rather than the standard, FoN, Hidden Forest (Trolls), Maby laearrist - Main Board
Talks about quest design, which falls into 5 basic categories according to the video. Can anyone think of a CF quest that doesn't fall into one of these categories?by laearrist - Main Board
anti-gank code works inversely to AP charges. So if you are worth 10 AP charges, only once that 11th person piles on to the gank will you see benefits. If you are worth zero charges, even 2 people will have trouble because you are a sad sack. anti-gank code takes into account allies. If you have cabal allies (regardless of where they are) you aren't getting gang, but rather failing toby laearrist - Main Board

Quotestarbright I suggest two general traits should be observed: (1) diminishing returns to everything (e.g. diminishing returns to elite-ness, to gear, to area knowledge, etc.), and (2) reduce time investment into unpleasant activities. The second will strike many of you hardcore CFers as diluting the hardcore-ness of CF, but I think with our increasing age and commitments it's not really pby laearrist - Main Board
The dynamics of that whole matchup are completely thrown out the window if orc cannot reliably get command denial. I'm not trying to make a value judgement, just that some classes (invoker) rely on active commands, while some rely on controlling the fight. The village bard has also sacrificed a significant portion of their versatility for increased effectiveness in battle specific cases, sby laearrist - Main Board
Which I think would be good as a counter to the current solo focus of CF. I like the idea of consecutive lag, but I'm not sure how the reality of it would work out. One of the major issues I see is that with safe teleport (let's be honest at hero it is like 99% safe) and easy to get use recall and such the only way to kill a competent player (like yourself) whose focus is on not dyingby laearrist - Main Board
If you remove lag, a whole bunch of matchups are dramatically different since they are built on the premise of denying basically all commands to your opponent. It is also really easy to survive already if you know what you are doing. Conservative play is already heavily rewarded in a bunch of cases. Lag being less effective would just make that even easier. I do feel sometimes that CF has too much rock paper scissors between builds and not enough within builds, but that, I think, is because it was originally designed for more group battles. I think if it was a 2 vs 2 battle of elf bard + RBW vs. Orc + whatever, it might be considerably more interesting, but then that doesn't much matter to you since that isn't your focus, and I accept thaby laearrist - Main Board

Quotezannon My view of why I find PK, as a stand alone facet of CF, to be boring, is a bit more flushed out in posts below. Again, the types of games I enjoy aren't the FPS type where it's just a kill or be killed type competition. I enjoy the RP, and PK only as it relates to the RP environment. But say CF existed where you could log in at 51, all skills at 100%, and everyone has a defaby laearrist - Main Board
Is CF difficult, or punishing? I think most things are punishing rather than difficult because they fail at the things outlined in the video. You don't know what a mob can do until you fight them. They don't telegraph anything. Iteration time is high. It can take hours to get back to where you were, or you have to wait out the entire ghost timer to even begin.by laearrist - Main Board
The interesting part about this video for me is not that it pointed out a success or flaw in CF (although there is something there probably), but rather helped me understand why I don't enjoy stealth classes: I'm not trying to solve a puzzle... I believe I already have the solution and am just waiting to execute it. Often with a ranger I'll see a ranking group in a wildernesby laearrist - Main Board
To me this points out a core problem with ranking in CF and most CF PvE. It is almost all difference in scale changes... How much different is ranking in the Academy Cavern vs Forest of NoWhere vs Akan vs... Not very. These are all differences in scale. In fact, most of Hell (that I've been too) is really just a vastly different difference in scale kind of PvE. There are some difby laearrist - Main Board
The good part of CF seem like someone really thought about these things, and the bad part seem like no one even considered it. Worth a watch.by laearrist - Main Board
Ranking is dull. (even in a group it is often rote monotonous activity with no meaningful interaction) I would agree it that is low engagement and high time investment in today's CF. I don't believe this was always the case though, and I think part of this is actually the lowered challenge to ranking. And how does that compare to the time investment in those areas? For instance, I think a lot of people find Immteraction very engaging, but waiting for immteraction not very engaging, which is why some people (like me) don't enjoy the empowerment process since it is a bunch of waiting, with a comparatively small time of engagement afterward. In the old system that was also a pretty hardby laearrist - Main Board
This video is a goldmine. It talks about how games being purely fun is a dead end. It also clearly demonstrates why CF is still being played 20 years later. It isn't just about being fun. It is about being engaging. Putting in the recent full loot conversation, getting a full sac is *not* fun. I don't think anyone is really pretending it is. What it *can* be is engaging. This whole series of videos is worth watching, but this last one really hits the core of CF in a lot of ways for me. You can basically substitute JRPG with CF and basically all the pitfalls and mistakes and problems from the video are applicable. Take a watch, let my know if you see it the way I do, and more importantly, if you don't.by laearrist - Main Board
