Bard can heal entire group, while resting, with minimal mana expenditure. A slowed bard with mana regen items will be able to heal non-stop. Anthem of resilience can not be dispelled, unlike sanc and invoker shields. A bard can tank if necessary. Bard can heal mana. Bard can give extra hit/dam/hp buffs. A bard is really, really useful, selectively more useful than a healer.
I find the people who jump me prepared the easiest kind of kill, since they are usually intent on trying to kill me, instead of intent on running away. YMMV. The generalisation of never fighting when jumped will make you miss out on the awesomness that is entwining a thief who misses a blackjack. And I can tell you, this feeling really kicks ass.
With all the evils I have played, I can tell you my groupmates rarely get me killed. First off, they know I will bail when I need to. I know they will, if they have to. I also expect them to keep tabs on group status, I know I will. And trust me, an average scion ally is at least 300% more likely to word you when you need it, than the average acolyte.
