It just seems like a ton of work to not try and decently defend it in the RotD and instead earn a denial.

Because if you stick to your moral high ground you risk punishment from your leadership. But if you go along with it and repeatedly kill goodies without any sort of well RPd remorse or crisis of conscience you’ll get punished by imms and made neutral.
I was playing a goodie and killed a goodie mage (didn’t know at the time) but when the mage questioned me about it and instead of showing remorse I gave him some flippant answer about caring more about destroying magic than good and evil. My alignment got adjusted towards neutral soon after.
It seems logical that you'd be willing to take stuff from people you trust but not take anything from people you don't trust.

There’s nothing wrong with educating applicants and making it a challenge for them to enter.

I’ve always thought it was in the ballpark of -3 to -6 and wasn’t guaranteed. Could be wrong.
When I played Magner, whirlwind legacy, Verathi tried to convince me to learn and use dent. When I figured out why I was kind of at the end of the character and didn’t have the motivation to duergar learn the skill to use properly.
