It's how Paladins are described in most games and literary sources. They are bound by their own personal honor and the laws of the land. Paladins should always try to be both good and lawful.

It's quite possible to make the Shokai-ite you described, but make that holy warrior as a chaotic good shaman and not a Paladin.
