First, if you are relatively new, Invokers are quite a difficult class to play correctly. You will, indeed, be lunch meat for much of the lower and middle ranks, though quite powerful after.
The reason you don't see a lot of people playing invokers is because they require a great deal of patience. You have to master a number of difficult spells, and spend a lot of time preparing, gathering wands and potions, and the like.
But they will eventually be quite powerful... see Zomerseis' logs on this board for an idea. I'd bet on a prepared Zomerseis against any single prepared rager, including Dhaevor. Invokers are versatile, can deal out tons of damage, and can often make mincemeat out of anyone with a racial vulnerability.
But if you are new, I'd suggest one of: Assassin, Ranger, Warrior, A-P. All are viable at the lower ranks, and have useful survival skills that don't require a lot of subtlety.
