As far as what you said(sparky) is concerned:

A) It's not a cabal power
B) The person that died wasn't a paladin

I think it was a shitty thing for a player to do, no doubt, but as a necromancer lich I think it fits in with the roleplay of the character. It wasn't a given that the assassin was going to die, he could've just as easily fled north or east, but I've no doubt that the player behind Zorszaul was hoping the person would flee south and thus die. Pretty heinous thing to do as a player, but again, fits the character just fine.
