I'm in total agreement with you.
I think that except in cases of rules violations (multicharing, cheating, etc.) Immortal interaction should somehow enhance roleplay. In this case, that would be, like you suggested, the Paladin guildmaster or, better still, BoltThrower's healer speaking with the bad paladin.
The reason: The Paladin helpfile makes it pretty clear that the Paladin has a special and unique relationship with his God. Therefor, Immortal interaction re: the paladin's actions should take place through his God, so that the Immortals are actually *encouraging* roleplaying. There is no rules violation here, simply a roleplaying one, and stepping outside the bounds of roleplaying to correct it is a little counterproductive.
Nepenthe makes an interesting comment further up that there are a group of Immortals that act as Paladin Guild Cabal Immortals to regulate Paladin roleplaying - cool idea to think of the guild as an entity. I think this subgroup should probably be added to the Helpfile, or at least made clear that the Paladin must answer to the expectations of more than just his/her god (just to alleviate confusion when a random wisinvis immortal unempowers a paladin with the same tone as though s/he were correcting a rules violator). The alternative to doing this, would, of course, be roleplaying the Paladin's God's healer, etc.
That being said, this Paladin in particular exhibited an obvious case of bad roleplaying, and instances of Paladin disempowerment are probably not so common and generally restricted to instances of bad roleplaying.
