I'm not the expert on conjurer tactics that you are, of course (no sarcasm intended, I haven't played one) and maybe that worked all the time for Polemachus, but it seems to me that if I were a rager warrior, I couldn't hope for a better set up than to be one on one with a conjurer without an archon or elemental or protective shield or .. etc. It seems to me that Jirgolo turning tail and running in the opposite direction is what might have saved Betazenth, there, and if he were trapped in a room with a bashing cloud rager warrior, it might be his worst nightmare come to life.
Of course, there are a few things I don't know, like, for example:
Would scourge hit the nightgaunt if it wasn't bound?
Did Jirgolo have the head?
Anyway, based on this, I can't imagine that Betazenth actually expected the gaunt to work.
