He had another nightgaunt there and was likely hoping that Jirgolo would thirst when the first nightgaunt attacked him. That way when the first nightgaunt dropped him Jirgolo would attack the second nightgaunt, who without a task to complete, would be just like a summoned mob. Then Betazenth can spam scourge or whatever whatever and kill the nearly dead rager.
Had he done this in a room or area where Jirgolo couldn't walk away with utmost ease it likely would've worked.
The above scenario is one in which I give Betazenth the benefit of the doubt.
