The first best way is to have somebody else find them for you, but since none of us are cheaters here, we'll disregard that tactic.

The second best way is to pull up the areas list. Go down the list and ask yourself these questions.

1)Which areas on this list are areas that are not often visited, for purposes such as ranking or gear gathering?

2)Which areas on this list are areas which people go to only to look at certain mobs, be it for gear or ranking in an isolated section of it.

These items are almost always placed in a not-so-difficult-to-find location, that generally happens to be in a part of an area that is not often looked over too closely.

The anti-magic scroll(if I'm thinking of the right one) is in an area where people go for gear only and usually don't take the time to look around too much.

The slow scroll is in an area where people go for other special items. The people that go here for these other special items have likely passed the slow scroll location many times.

An oldish wand location was in an area that people usually pass through to head to a ranking area that became popular with the advent of conjurers.

The same story has been told numerous times, you just have to apply it.
