You can attack an out-of-range person's charmies if the person is not in the same room as you.

That is how hero Paladins, for example, can summon and kill a spectre's zombies/ghouls.

Havilahd made "great" use of this - Personally, I felt his particular use abused the spirit of the rules in not harming out-of-range PKs (No, I won't describe it, lest I give other spectres ideas - at heart, I'll always be a Maran).
