Actually, it's less iffy than you think. There's a certain amount of "gamble" involved, but mana is hardly the only factor in determining what shows up. But, yes, it is complicated and was designed to be complex enough to keep it interesting (ie. each conjurer needs to figure out what works best for them personally).
