since you'd be rather out of character saying 3 days when in games it's been over -months- that is why elven days is used
so when you say "i'll be back in an hour" the person doesn't go...umm is that game time..(ie will be back in 2 shakes of a rattlesnake) or is that one hour real time...

Elven time is used to imply real..non game time
since elves are longer lived and can afford to be slow lazy bastards.
