It sucks being a newbie and not knowing how to do simple things, and since I've given it more thought you are right...a lot of game mechanics type stuff is hard to ask about (or answer, even) in character. I guess the key is to be patient, and if it looks like they're _trying_ to ask in character, give them the benefit of the doubt.
