My take on why is that otherwise there would be no downside. Changing your alignment should not be something anybody does lightly, it completely changes the very fabric of your character's existance.

If you are determined to RP your way through the problems to redeem yourself, or to show you are worthy of your new life, there's ways to get your lost powers back, but they all involve roleplaying extremely well.

So no, you don't suddenly forget how to use a sword. You are being punished by the gods for your hasty and ill-conceived change of heart.
