Dedication.
Dedication to a character no matter what happens (within reason). I think a lot of players (a lot who would consider themselves elite) have potential to play excellent characters that would be remembered for a long time, yet they get killed one time too many and delete. Notice how many characters delete vs. age death or con die...
I think the first trick is to create a character that is deep and stick with it. Develope the character through role and interactions with gods/players, and know exactly how that character would react in any given situation...and don't veer from that. If you play a character until they age die you'll be amazed at how much you learn and how rich (rp wise) that character becomes. If you picked three very different characters (class/race wise) and played them all until age death (one at a time)you'd learn different areas for ranking, the stats on different gear, what type of gear each type needs, stradegies to kill with these types, stradegies to not die with these type while fighting other characters...etc. And like a wise gnome once said...playing a type of character is the best way to learn how to beat them later on...you learn their weaknesses.
If having multiple newbies distracts you, don't have them. Only allow yourself that one character. I also think having ooc buddies to group with stunts the learning process. It may be convienent...but I think it holds you back and makes the character not get out there and develope his rp naturally.
Hrm, I think I rambled enough to get my point across. Basically, I think it's more important to get deep into a character...and then you'll start reading about yourself on the forum and what not. It doesn't work well the other way around.
