I have always been of the idea that it would be great to play a character that was not restricted by a class titles. What I mean is this.
Create each race with certain benefits, abilities and drawbacks, and give them a certain number of "class points" have a myriad of spells and skills for them to purchase, so they can custimize their character. So you wanna cause more damage than a nuclear bomb, well cool, thats your choice, but your gonna get hit alot. You can still make it so that certain races dont have access to certain things, for example dwarves and spells, but this way, you dont look at the title of a character and say, "Shit, I better kill him now, cause next level he gets throw"
You would still need x amount of experience points to level (based on race) and you would recieve a certain number of "class points" Damn, I can learn trip now, but then I wont have enough points for bash" etc.
I know there are a lot of holes in this thought, but this is just a basic premise. I dont *want* to know what my unfamiliar opponent can do, I wanna find out like in real life, by watching, or trying for myself.
Just a thought
