I myself have had numerous Empowered chars, a few paladins, and know many people who get empowered in a week (no none of us have imm connections).

My point is, I enjoyed my paladins, They could not fight A-p's evil shamans or High ranked necros, but they were fun. Paladin is only a poor choice if the only thing you go for is pk ability.
