Since I just got done playing a healer, thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. If you are going to be a half-elf, staff wouldn't be a wise choice. I used staff, but only because as a dwarf I had tons of hps which helped balance out the loss of shield block. Personally, I would suggest being a gnome for the mana, but it all depends on what you are trying to do with your character. So there is my 1/8 of a cent part of the advice. Here is the rest: Don't gear for damage if you want survive holds at hero level. :P I learned the hard way..
