What is the advantage of a two handed weapon? (some text):

What is the advantage of a two handed weapon like spear, staff, sword, axe, etc. Do you hit harder? Do you parry better? Or is it better to stick to weapon that you can dual wield?

ps I'm not talking about warrior spec either. Any insights would be helpful. Thanks.
