you parry better in most cases (thats not saying a two handed sword parries better than a one handed -talking about staff, spear, polearm)-
for felars obvious bonus of better parry and extra claw attacks
giants can wield a shield with a two handed sword, axe or whatever

You are supposed to tank better with a polearm - tho since it was changed im not convinced about that (thats distance in particular).
pugil is a non weapon spec skill (that is many classes can pugil) that does a fair amount of damage with a staff - that you dont
get a smilar skill with any other weapon.
