Polemarchus was a person in real life. I first heard of him when I was reading The Republic of Plato. Socrates discussed the meaning of justice of with him. Greek names have that medeival feel to them, so I lifted it.
See what happens when somebody is allowed to have the name and role of another character from a book? Pretty soon you've got them out the wazoo.
I like to think mine is "more original" though, since fewer people who play muds have read Plato's work than fantasy novels.
