I'm not saying I am the almighty, but from having a dwarf sword spec and a cloud polearm spec into into the 40's here is what I have seen.
Yes, the dwarf had more hp, and could dish out more damage, but the polearm worked better vs nearly everything when defense mattered. Assassins, thieves, and bird forms usually only attack once, and if you don't kill them outright, they get the point (no pun intended). Anyway I have had 2 equal level rager thieves trying to kill me in the maus (after they killed my assassin and healer groupmates while we were fighting other creatures), and I handed them both their ass. It's nice to spam flee from a thief and kill that lamo with a flee-knife trigger from charge-set.
Where's the point? Umm, if you want to avoid blackjack and strangle, and don't mind switching out weapons for mages, go for the polearm.
PS. Qohr was NOT one of the lamers that attacked me in the maus, I might try to dig up the log. Qohr was a very fun opponent, we battled a decent number of times with him coming up short in a bad way until he could dirt-disarm me. Those 8 levels he had on me didn't help enough, polearms rock.(Grietus)
