Well, coding is programming. Programming is handy for more than mudding. The language that most muds are written in is C, so a good start on that would be to go take a night class in C++... coding is an actual, salable skill, though I guess there's a lot of implementors who've learned through mud coding. Best way is by taking a class or going through a tutorial book on C, though.

As for building, this is easy. What you turn out is equal parts creativity and technical skill. If you don't like writing, or aren't creative, don't bother, since you'll only be halfway there at best. The technical part you learn by mudding and observing the mechanics of areas... this is something you'll get better at as you write more.

The specifics of *how* to build an area change from mud to mud. It's a really easy script thing, not hard to learn at all, simply mud-dependant. My advice would be to make a really good character and imm here on CF. Everyone's really helpful at the low imm levels, and with their help and Pico/the other imms' great backup further on in the process, you'll learn quickly and do fine.
