Most muds that I have been affiliated with (having imped one, and built another) have had some form of OLC, or On Line Creation.
It is basically a script that allows you to build areas with absolutely zero coding knowledge.
I have found the best way to find out about these things is to use Altavista.digital.com.
Do a search for olc, or 'on line creation'. Or 'Multi-user domain', or any other combination of words you can think of that have something to do with Muds.
There are literally thousands of web pages out there devoted solely to helping people build/create/run muds.
I have also found that a "hands on" approach is the best way to learn this sort of thing, Copies of base circle/rom/diku code are free, and usually you can download a patch, or find help on how to get it up and running under windows(muds usually work in a Linux format, but more people use windows as their home operating system) or even under Mac.
Then compile and run it on your home computer, and basically just play around with it, experiment. Usually at the places where you can download the base code, they offer a message board so you can post any questions/problems you come across, and most have people that are more than willing to offer specialized help.
