Why is the reason immortals do it this way? The most obvious reason is because they do not want people power-ranking. They want people to put effort into the character. How about make a character stay at a certian level for so long before he can rank? Also, so they just do not sit in the guild, they have to move around, maybe explore areas for knowledge, you can have small meaningless quests also. I.e., to improve your sword, the guildmaster tells you to seek the swordmaster of Udgaard (you go there and pay him some gold). Then at each rank, you get additional practices you can use above the 75% mark.
