I agree. It is a pretty suckass way to do power gain... however, I can't really think of a plausible better way. Well, I think think of a couple, but I don't know if they'd work.

The trick here is to figure out an automated quest with either enough random variables to make its difficulty stick with each re-quest. Or they could be imm-run, with sentient mobs giving the player a run for their money (imms tend to be okay pkers). However, imms have a LOT of other shit to do, and while they might like running quests, it's not a very workable solution for multiple quests in this playerbase.
Everything else is basically a spinoff of that. My question is how do other muds handle power gain? How do you do it in D&D or other fantasy games? There's got to be a better way, but what is it?
