From what I saw, Double block was put in to aid more in ranking than anything else. What with many of the areas that are faught between 40 and hero being changed to make ranking harder(mortorn with summoned guards, aridhol with 3+ trollocs standing together etc) Ragers really took it in the ass if they did not have a bard around. Double block is mostly used when the Defender is NOT taking the hits, and he blocks attacks aimed at the tank of the group...It is kindof like a feint type thing.

Actually, as a new rager learning about how ragers work, I would go Scout first. Thier spellbane can make area spells miss them without them thirsting and becoming aggro to everything...and in today's day and age where every mage and his brother has large stockpiles of the "secret" aura/barrier/shield items...critical hit can be very devastating to a mage, even more affective than deathblow.

Berserkers on the otherhand have thirst...wich can get you in alot of bad situations. For one, you need to thirst to be able to bane scourge and 80% of the really painfull invoker spells, and any half intelligent mage will be able to anticipate that and work it to his advantage.

Of course, If you go defender, you will probably be able to rank to hero faster than anyone (excepting of course bards) because with your double block and healing, all the "tanks" in battle will want you along.
