It is all how dwarves are shown in alot of the fantasy literature.
1) drink hideous concoctions of strong schtuff.
2) loud.
3) extrememly hidebound
4) clan system
When people look inside their own minds for a picture of how a dwarf acts, speaks, behaves, they take the above, which is unfortunately the only picture we get of dwarves from 99% of the fantasy writers, and we think of something we know in real life to fill in the rest.
What well known (in the eurocentric western society that dominates cf and most fantasy literature) culture also has those four things included in their stereotype...Scotts.
It is funny that you should mention this, I remember having a long conversation with another ftaer (who has an unhealthy desire to play nothing but dwarves) concerning this exact thing....Just once I would like to see a dwarf roleplayed like say....a feudal Japanese Lord...complete with the asian to english stereotypical accent (r's instead of l's...etc.)
