Duergar thieves actually have quite a bit going for them. Their vulns suck, true. However, they're the strongest thieves, and they get more HP than the more popular human/arial options. This translates to stronger backstabs, more looting (high str and high dex = loot, loot, loot), and a wider weapon selection. Also, fear the thief with a suit of Pwent....
That said, I'd recommend human or arial for less experienced players.

Duergar are actually one of the better races for dagger specs, also, for many of the above reasons. Sword/whip, mace/whip, pole/mace, and similar combinations all have a great deal of potential on a duergar.
