Don't think 21st century. Think Viking skjalds and Mongol hordes. Men who fought hand-to-hand, waist deep in the blood, knowing that any battle would likely leave them dead, or worse, crippled and wounded. Many ancient warriors societies had bard-like people in them, people who inspired, drove, and directed the masses in battle. They weren't some ridiculous marching band, lugging around tubas and wearing pretty uniforms. They educated the warriors with tales of battles past, and let them know that heroic deeds would be sung in the feast-halls for all days, and cowardice would earn them eternal shame. Chieftains and such were chosen on the basis of reputation, and bard-like people made or broke reputations.
In no way did people of those time "look down" upon the bards.
> I think what he's saying is there's the fighters and then there's the band. The fighters look down on the band because they're not REALLY fighters, they're the people that want military service on their resume but don't really want to do anything for their country except blow on a horn and get a nice career out of it.

> Now, the connection to CF, albeit a weak one, is that the "real" ragers (warriors, assassins, thieves, rangers) should look down upon the bards. This'll never ever ever happen because bards=better chance for successful pk and when you boil away the extraneous bullshit, that's what it's all about.
