In no particular order:
1) Conjurer. Many of their less obvious spells really shine during exploration. Add in potent solo fighting ability (with the right servitors), the full range of wands/staves/scrolls, and clever use of familiars, and you are all set.
2) Healer. Very tough to kill, can handle almost any malediction, and have multiple ways to get out of trouble. They have trouble killing the bigger mobs without the right gear, however.
3) Bard. Another versatile class. Decent fighters, can heal, maledict, calm, and use staves and scrolls.
4) Trannies. Arcanes are nice, but they are toast if they walk into the wrong room, as others have said. For shifters, major forms help with fighting, and they can snap off a few quick spells to equalize matters in longer fights.
5) Necromancers. Blind, sleep, vamp touch, PWK (all with spellcraft), and a horde of undead are all very, very useful. Liches probably outshine all other classes, but spectres can do quite well.
The other classes all excel at certain types of areas, but they can get in trouble more easily.
As far as alignment, being good is helpful, becuase of request. As far as cabal choice, most cabals will hinder you, as you'll need to think about defending and such. If you had to pick, Master's powers are very nice for exploring, with Arcane/Divine citizens also getting a significant boost. Cabal to avoid: Arbies.
