What could be done to make it seem slightly more believable that two people can communicate half way across the world without a phone, is use carrier pidgeons.
This is a bit of a sketchy idea, but I think I've got the roots there:
A pigeon can travel from any place in thera to any other place carring a piece of paper with a message on it one line long... The message could be something like "Important - Meet at the Inn of the Eternal Star, Playername" then the other person could reply with "OK, Coming" or "No"
Now, this is the big bit, you can only send one of these little pigeons per tick, so if you want to get groups, you have to get everybody to meet up and use Say...
Another addition this would need is a proper 'whisper' command, that accepts a target to whisper to in the same room...
Well, that's my rather inane contribution, feel free to tell me how it's not practical and everyone should be telepathic or issued with mobile phones.
