I would sugguest humans. They have the least learning penalities. Every race has a weakness except for humans. You don't really have to worry about seeing in the dark, because most likey you have armor that has a glow flag which will take care of the problem. I would also sugguest Duergars they can see hidden, which can take care of all those thieves and assassins.
