Hmm. Dunno. Bad luck? Try more. Normally, sleep never was the most difficult
spell to practice. Also, you don't need to by a pet for that - just go to
any area with low-level mobs, sleep one, and practice all you want on it.
For me, the most difficult spell was identify :-)
And one more thing: drow necromancers suck!
I'd recommend human or arial, especially for a sorta newbie like you...
