Much depends on the race you play. Dwarves and ginats can handle the damage and might not benefit from hp gear. (In truth, my dwarf did better than the old-style paladins in combat).
A suggestion is perfect your suplications and not just physical weapons. Those prayers are the weapons entrusted to you by your god...do not treat them any less than physical weapons. Additionally, once perfected, you fail less, giving yourself more mana for your combats.
Ultimately, it depends on your perceived role: are you a Warrior-shaman who loves the hack-and-slash, or do you use the powers of your faith primarily, or a combination of both? The choice is yours. Play a fire giant or duergar, and your mana is going to be less to maintain a game balance. - Remember the days of a duergar necro - they were ugly to fight. -A
