My shaman is in the middle ranks now, I've armored it for mana, hp, and hit dam... I can't really tell what has worked the best. I don't really want to carry three suits of armor around, and switch shtuff every time I fight.
Hp are important because you have to take a lot of abuse to get yer sups off, parry and shield block are mastered and sanc helps too... but you do have to be able to take damage.
Mana is tough, right now I'm armored for hp and a little mana. It takes me about 35% of my mana to get ready for a fight IE sanc and protective shield. And ususally I dont' start at full mana anyhow. Usually after sanc and protective shield i'm at about 50% to 60%.
Some failed plagues and weakens and blinds and I've got about 30% to 40% left for harm and healing... most battles I end up running out of mana before there done and kicking them to death. At least I win. My hp are usually low enough to where I don't want to go any lower than the hp I do have............ but maybe if I armor for hit and dam the fight will go faster and I won't need the hp and mana as much.
