I think it is like what everyone is alluding too. It depends on how the formula is actually implemented but here is how
I understand it:
Average is well ... average - For example a weapon with 6d8 (Spiked bloody club) and
a weapon with 8d6 (mace of holy Empowerment), will not have the same average (which BTW should
actually be called mean rather than average). The first number is constant the second number is
variable. Therefore, the spiked club will do between 6 - 48 dam with the mean/av of 27 and the
mace doing between 8 - 48 with the mean/av of 28. The damage is delivered in whole numbers. For
instance the bloddy spiked club will be multiples of 8 up to 48.
Damage is then added to the roll (i.e. the whole number given out by the object + dam stat).
Modifiers - Enhanced Damage, char level, Cabal powers, etc.
Final Damage, I think, is: (object's role + Damage)* modifiers
Hit roll: chance of delivering the Damage rolled.

So, IMHO, it appears that in most cases you would want your average to increase more than your dam, but without the hit increasing
the point is mute because you will never deliver the damage to your enemy. So, in general, if I am comfortable with my hit/dam stats,
I would go with the higher average. This is how I have somewhat figured it out, but I may be way off base which is probably why I suck
at PK'ing :) I have only figured this out empirically and not in any real scientific manner, but it works for me.
